RESEARCH

MUSIC IN MOTION

After looking at many examples, I found that animated music videos usually fall into three main types. These types show different ways visuals can match a song, help tell a story, or make the music feel more exciting.

ABSTRACT

shows the mood and feeling of the music.

TEXT BASED

animates the lyrics or typography in a stylized way.

NARRATIVE

tells a story based on the song’s lyrics.

CHOSEN SONG

From the Start (Good Kid Cover)

I chose “Good Kid, From The Start (Laufey Cover)” for my visual edit because its fast upbeat tempo and clear rhythm giveS me a lot of creative opportunities.

I plan to animate the section from 0:56 to 1:06.

2ND PASS

ANIMATION PASSES

For our 2nd pass, I needed to animate part of the edit as well as building every asset that I needed in my program ready to be animated.

For critique II was told to focus on making all of the frames feel more connected in the movment

ANIMATIC

For our first pass, I needed to create an animatic that showed a rough estimate of what the timing of the sequence would be like.
I sis create a couple of frames to show off what a fully rendered shot would look like.

3RD PASS

For our third pass of animation I needed to have 80% animation done and be ready to animate the rest of the sequence.

I was also told to make the drop shadow I have on some of the text more consistent over all and to have more Dot shading through out the piece.

TECHNICAL EXECUTION

To create the falling letter effect, I animated a letter dropping in a separate comp, then brought it into my main scene and masked the area where I wanted it to appear.

To get to this point, it took a lot of animation and moving parts, not just in the main scenes but also in the footage builder with all the transitions.

To get a warm and tactile look, I layered several textures in After Effects and adjusted the color settings so everything felt natural and blended together.

To make the mailbox open and close, I turned the door into a 3D object and used the Z-rotation to animate it. I did this using the 3D builder tools in After Effects.

FINAL THOUGHTS

After doing this project, I learned how important it is to sync visuals to the track, and I was able to show off many of the techniques I’ve learned in After Effects. This project also pushed me to create multiple transitions that felt smooth and didn’t interrupt the flow of the sequence. Overall, it helped me improve my timing, creativity, and confidence in my editing skills.
